Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. Her aunt Denise inspired her love of artistic expression and creative thinking. The aunt was on in the evening shift as a nurse to ensure she could follow her passion for art literature and theater throughout the day. DuVernay loved the film West Side Story, which she brought to her. DuVernay was instructed by her mom that the art form could be utilized as a tool for activism. DuVernay was also taught by her mother who was a social sassy and instilled DuVernay to show her creativity through art. Even though DuVernay grew up living in Compton with her family she lived living in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family lived for generations. DuVernay's Dad recalled seeing the civil rights march of the past on the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. The summers she spent in Selma, Alabama would inspire her later to make an animated film on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay completed Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in California in the year 1990. In the year 1990, she was a graduate of the Saint Joseph High School located in Lakewood California. DuVernay began producing television news when she was just a young student. Her first job was as an assistant for CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being given an assignment to watch the home and looking through the garbage belonging to one of the juries. Due to her tasks, she became dissatisfied with journalistic work and entered the publicity business. DuVernay got her first job as a publicist at a small production studio right out of high school. The company she founded for her own PR, The DuVernay Agency was founded in 1999. In addition to PR her agency launched a number of social media and lifestyle networks, including The Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
